CEDC + Western Balkans Defence Policy Directors Meeting, Portorož, 19–20 March 2026
On 19–20 March 2026, Slovenia, in its role as the CEDC Presidency, hosted the CEDC + Western Balkans Defence Policy Directors Meeting in Portorož.
The meeting brought together Defence Policy Directors from CEDC Member States and partners from the Western Balkans, providing an important platform for strategic dialogue, exchange of views and strengthening regional cooperation.
Discussions focused on key developments in the European security environment, including the evolving security landscape, EU defence initiatives, and ongoing missions and operations. Particular attention was given to enhancing practical cooperation between CEDC Member States and Western Balkans partners, reflecting a shared commitment to stability and security in the region.
On the margins of the meeting, a Balkan Medical Task Force (BMTF) Defence Policy Directors Working Breakfast was also held, providing an additional opportunity for the exchange of views on the current state of play and future perspectives of BMTF cooperation.
The programme combined substantive working sessions with opportunities for informal exchange, fostering a constructive and open atmosphere for dialogue throughout the meeting.
The meeting reaffirmed the importance of the CEDC + Western Balkans format as a valuable framework for dialogue and cooperation, as well as the continued relevance of close coordination in addressing shared security challenges and advancing common priorities.
Building on the outcomes of the meeting, Slovenia will continue to actively advance discussions within the CEDC framework and further strengthen cooperation with partners from the Western Balkans. In this context, the Slovenian Presidency looks forward to welcoming participants again at the upcoming CEDC Ministerial Meeting in September 2026.
